Calendar Desktop Wallpaper: February 2010

There are many ways of going forward, but only one way of standing still.
Franklin D. Roosevelt

Thanks for all the positive comments and requests for calendar wallpapers. Sorry I got late again.
I think I’ll add a few more variations this time on my Flickr later.

Clip Watch

I’ve been thinking about a watch I can put on my coat or bag, which tells me time when I need to know because when it’s cold, my watch is under the thick coat and is hard to take out.

By making it look like a button, it may go well with many kinds of outer wears.

Click the face once and it displays the time and date on the glass face for a few seconds. (I figure we usually don’t need to stare at a watch for a long time.)

Solar battery panels charges electricity for the display.

“The first step towards getting somewhere is to decide that you are not going to stay where you are.”
John Pierpont Morgan

Sorry I got late again.
A great quote. This makes me want to get out of a comfy place to challenge new things. So I designed a frosted window seen inside of a room. Let’s get out!

Future of Internet Search: Mobile version

Just type “future” in Google Image Search and you can see my images listed in the results. Other top search terms are “calendar design”, “ipod touch camera”, “desktop wallpaper”, etc. Thank you, Google!

iPod Touch Camera?

This year I joined Vimeo, Twitter, LinkedIn and FFFFOUND!

On Vimeo, I upload the animation of the devices I make for this blog. I’ll update my YouTube later.

Twitter is where I post little ideas and other updates not posted in this blog.

On LinkedIn, Behance Network and Coroflot, I’m trying to expand my professional connections.

On FFFFOUND and My Likes on Vimeo, you can see what I found interesting on the internet. (Favorites on YouTube is for my kids.) I update FFFFOUND every day, so check it out.

Also I use Flickr to post photos of my daily life and images used in this blog as well as photos of the books I read and sketches in my Moleskine. I’m thinking of uploading lots of botched images that couldn’t be brought to light in this blog like this.

Resolutions for 2010

Looking back at the resolutions for 2009, I think everything has come true. I can now make animation to show my concepts in motion. I can’t tell you about this now, but I made something tangible this year, which you’ll be able to see sometime in 2010. And this year the total access of this blog reached 1 million, I just got 1,000 followers on Twitter today. And most of all I received a red dot design award!

For next year I want to deepen my concept levels and to make things simpler even if it takes much more time. So the posts might become fewer and happen less frequently (sorry!). But what I want to do most in 2010 is to prepare for the next move. As I mentioned in a post and Twitter before, I want to do concept designs for sci-fi films. So I will not only create futuristic gadgets, but I also try to broaden my network towards that area of industry. I’d very much appreciate if there are people doing the related jobs who could talk to me.

That’s it for this year. I truly appreciate your support and positive comments. Thank you very very much!!

Mobile Phone Concepts "Floater"

About 80% of the day time, my mobile phone sits on my desk. I have it in my hand or in my pocket for the other 20%. I was just wondering why not make it look better on a table if it’s in the idling mode most of the time. Just sitting flat on the desk is not fun to look at.

Floater A
Wouldn’t it be fun if your cell phone sits up by itself (or tilt up a little) when put on the desk and starts moving when there’s a phone call or an incoming message? The curved bottom allows itself to tilt up a little bit when put on a flat surface and left idle for some time. It starts nodding or rotating when it receives a phone call or an email etc.

Floater B
This one doesn’t move by itself, but it has a supporter on its back to make the round body stand on a flat surface. You slide the supporter the other way and you can use it as a physical keypad.

“Floater” comes from a surfing technique. Both look like a surfboard, don’t they?

Infographic Coins

The round shaped coins must have a lot of benefits that other figures such as a triangle or a square don’t. Also, non-rounded coins may have many demerits. Aside from those, travelers and other people who are not accustomed to the currency would be able to easily remember how much each of these coins is (as long as she knows how to read pie charts).

“There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.”
Albert Einstein

This is one of my most favorite quotes of Einstein.
To me, the most common miracle I see every day is to see my kids, who wouldn’t have been born if I hadn’t met my wife. It’s a miracle to meet them among billions of souls.

By the way, I’m sorry for posting this one so late. I was busy getting things back to normal after the trip to Singapore, where I attended the awarding ceremony of red dot design concept. I posted some photos I took in Singapore on my Flickr, so check them out.

One more apology: the november calendar has the “31st”, which must not exist. Sorry!

Cobalto & Zafiro

This is something a little different from my usual posts. This time I tried to design gadgets that I want to see in a Sci-Fi movie like “Minority Report”. I love the futuristic computer and the UX in the movie, but I was wondering what it would be like if I designed those stuff. So this time I just focused on look and feel of the devices.

“Cobalto”
I don’t remember what the mobile phone is like that is used in the movie, but the glass computer screen remains vividly in my mind and I tried to use as much lucent stuff as possible.

With this deformable metal, you can have either the usual number buttons or an iPod like dial.

LIke one of my previous posts “3D Desktop PC Concept“, it would be fun if this could create 3D objects in the air. With this device, you could see 3D holography on top of a 2D screen, so it would be really exciting.

I happened to be talked to by a Russian TV program, who wanted to feature my 3D desktop concept, so I also gave them this mobile phone concept images and 3D animation. Check out the animation too!

“Zafiro”

The desktop is also made of a glass screen and a round rim. This is not the one that Tom Cruise makes that hand (or body) gesture to use. This is a desktop PC.

Remember that transparent disk used in Minority Report? It can be also inserted on the screen.

The keyboard has the deformable metal and the keys get flattened when not in use.

I mentioned that I wanted to try a new career on Twitter and I’ve been thinking of becoming a concept designer for movies. I’m finding a way to be one. Do you think I can be a Hollywood concept artist?

By the way, I’ll be out of Japan next week to attend the red dot award ceremony in Singapore, so I won’t be able to post for FFFFOUND! during the week. But I’ll upload some Singapore photos in my Flickr. Oh of course I’ll be tweeting while I’m in Singapore, too.

iPetals

I like Fandi Meng‘s great “Sunny Flower” concept very much and was inspired a lot by the design.

iPetals_a

It’s a solar charger for an iPhone. Based on Fandi’s design, I made it work also as an iPhone stand.
