Song you mustn’t miss: A Thousand Winds

This is from Kohaku Uta Gassen or an annual music show on the new year’s eve produced by a Japanese public broadcaster. I was so moved by the lyrics and the melody, so I’ll put the video and translation here. (Sorry, it’s not related to the main theme of this blog, but music must stimulate your creativity.)

The song is titled “A Thousand Winds”.

Do not stand at my grave and weep,

I am not there, I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow;

I am the diamond glints on snow,

I am the sunlight on ripened grain;

I am the gentle autumn’s rain.

When you awake in the morning bush,

I am the swift uplifting rush

Of quiet in circled flight.

I am the soft star that shines at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry.

I am not there; I did not die.

  1. I have been searching for this song for some time now, after hearing it on a Japanese radio in Hawaii. I used to live in Japan but missed seeing the Kohaku in recent years. This most stirring video is a real treat…please keep it going so I can share it with my friends and family.

  2. Thanks for your comment, Lynn. Yeah, I love this song. I heard this song for the first time in Kohaku 2 years ago. Then again in the same program last year. That time one widow requested the song actually. She also heard the song 2 years ago with her husband, who she knew was gonna die soon because of cancer. She heard the song, hid from him and cried her eyes out. I hope she remembers this song when she goes to her husband’s grave.
